birdland are formed by brothers robert (vocals) and lee vincent (guitar), along with syd rogers (bass) and gene kale (drums)
all the band members with the exception of syd rogers had previously played in zodiac motel, who had recorded one seven inch and two twelve inch singles, sunshine miner and crystal injection and an album, the story of roland flagg, before collapsing in 1987
demos are recorded and the band sign to lazy records, home of the primitives

the band are given a support slot on janes addiction uk tour but are sacked after the first date

hollow heart is released and reaches number two in the independent chart. sales are bolstered by the bands first uk tour
